This National Geographic video, titled "Top 5 Phone Addicts | Crowd Control," explores phone addiction in social settings through an interactive experiment hosted by behavior change expert Daniel Pink [00:29]. Overview of the Experiment The goal of the experiment is to encourage restaurant diners to put away their smartphones during meals [00:20]. The Setup: Each table in the restaurant is equipped with a cell phone docking station [00:26]. The Rules: Tables start with 1,000 points [00:36] (roughly equivalent to 3 minutes of talk time). The Penalty: If anyone at the table removes or uses their phone, the digital counter rapidly decreases [00:32]. Realizations of Addiction: One diner admits that while she didn't view herself as a phone addict before, the experiment made her realize her habits during dinner [01:08]. Unintentional Point Losses: An older diner pulls out his phone to use its flashlight to read the menu in the dim lighting [01:19], causing his table's score to drop from 1,000 down to 837 points [01:24], sparking playful scolding from his tablemates [01:23]. When I go out to eat/drinks with friends, we all put our phones in the middle while we eat. First one to touch their phone picks up the tab.
